Anniatu (Sicilian dialect for “drowned”) is a Sicilian electronic music producer currently residing in the UK. His music engages with Sicilian folklore as captured by anthropologists in the afterwar period, and with the subsequent uses and abuses of such heritage. Anniatu strives to come to terms with the expression of a people drowned in History, and tries to make sense of his own relation to that people and their culture: they’re distant, barely one step away from otherness, and yet inextricable from Anniatu’s own upbringing.

My Life in the Dump of Ghosts, Anniatu’s first EP, looks at the garbage that suffocates every corner of Sicily. Garbage signifies the neglect of the old and new Sicilian lower classes, and of their culture. At the same time, garbage itself has become new folklore, the material culture of an island left to drown. Anniatu twists the folk repertoire through industrial clangs, rhythmic spasms, and the disquiet of Hyperdub sounds. In so doing, he imagines the debris of a world in which archaism and hypermodernity coexist.

Anniatu ("annegato" in dialetto siciliano) è un produttore siciliano di musica elettronica che vive nel Regno Unito. La sua musica si confronta col folklore siciliano catturato dagli antropologi nel dopoguerra, e con i successivi usi e abusi di quel patrimonio culturale. Anniatu cerca di venire a patti con l’espressione di un popolo annegato dalla Storia, e cerca di comprendere il suo rapporto con quel popolo e quell’espressione – lontani, a un passo dall’alterità, eppure inestricabili dalla biografia di Anniatu.

My Life in the Dump of Ghosts, il suo EP d’esordio, guarda alla spazzatura che soffoca ogni angolo della Sicilia. La spazzatura rispecchia l’abbandono delle classi popolari siciliane vecchie e nuove e della loro cultura, ed è allo stesso tempo nuovo folklore, cultura materiale di un’isola lasciata ad annegare. Stravolgendo il repertorio folk attraverso clangori industrial, spasmi ritmici e l’inquietudine del suono Hyperdub, Anniatu immagina i rottami di un mondo in cui arcaismo e ipermodernità coesistono.
